Glasgow

The contemporary city, city of culture, and a few barrels of entertainment thrown in for good measure.

Glaswegians are known for being a bit different from the norm.

Glasgow’s routes are steeped in history from slavery to slums through exploitation, deprivation and severe hardship but today there is no place like it.

Often described as one of the friendliest places in the world which sticks its two fingers up when ever it can. A clear demonstration of this is the statue of Duke of Wellington which is humorously outside the gallery of modern art.

For over 30 years a traffic cone is place on the head of the Duke. EVERY NIGHT this is removed by the authorities, and EVERY MORNING for more than 30 years, the cone appears back once again. Perhaps in an act of anti-establishment.

The cone represents an important part of the city’s identity – Glasgow’s unique sense of humour.

Traveling to Glasgow

With may route options to get from London to Glasgow. Including a long drive by car or bus, flying. Day time train was our choice today. This route from London Euston to Glasgow Central was being operated by Avanti West Coast. Which looks exactly like the same trains Virgin used on the same line. But with a bit of new colour. If it was the same standard that Virgin had in first class then this would be pretty easy.

Journey time was to take Just over 4 and a half hours.

This train journey went by pretty fast, with plenty of food coming by every hour or so, and more free alcoholic drinks than I could handle in the journey time.

There was a good choice of food starting with a bap filled with hot bacon washed down with a nice cup of English breakfast tea. Then it was on to the serious case of trying out as many whisky’s as I could before arriving in Scotland.

The key to a good first class ticket price, is booking a ticket called 1st Class Advance. Prices can vary a lot, so check the right date and the right time, keeping away from peak hours, and if your as lucky as me my ticket was a fraction of the listed price, and even better there was just a few of us in the first class carriage. 117 was such a saving over a possible 257 if I took the next train.

Booking my ticket

Booking my ticket was easy and I used a website called trainline and the ticket came to my phone in the form of a QR code. There are no real discount sites, it’ just which train is the cheapest probably depending on the amount of people they are expecting on the train, you can also book with LNER & Avanti WestCoast, at the same price.

My reason for being here was I was attending a business meeting in town, over the next few days, but before work duties set in. On my own I was going to see what this famous night life was all about first and just how friendly Glasgow really was; before I find the best vacation rental there was on AirBnB and was it really that good ? have a read of where I was staying here

After all I had booked this for some work colleagues who were also coming to Glasgow for this meeting. It had to be the best I could find, why not it was a work expense 🙂

Graces Irish bar Glasgow

Being of Irish decent, I had heard from one of my friends that the place to be in Glasgow was Grace’s in Merchant city, which I’m happy to report lived right up to its reputation.

Excellent Irish music, a decent pint of Guinness, a great atmosphere and the perfect way to party the rest of the night away even if I arrived there all on my own, I was not all by my self now.
